Ongoing research in the Fry group focuses on investigating (1) atmospheric reactive nitrogen (NHx and NOx) in gas and aerosol (particulate matter) phases, (2) mechanisms of secondary aerosol formation and consequences for transport and deposition, and (3) sources and intervention strategies of urban air pollution. We use existing monitoring data analysis, regional chemistry/meteorology model simulations, and field measurements. The latter include gas-phase measurement of NO, NO2, NH3, NOy and O3, speciated oxides of nitrogen in gas and aerosol phase by thermal desorption - cavity ringdown spectroscopy (TD-CRDS), aerosol chemical composition analysis by ACSM, particle size distribution measurements by optical particle spectrometer (OPS); black carbon measurements by microaethelometer, and CO2 measurements by LiCor. Ambient sampling is enabled by the Ruisdael Observatory network and the WUR Veenkampen research station. Computer modeling tools employed include molecular structure and reaction coordinate computations, atmospheric kinetics box models, regional chemical and dynamics modeling, and positive matrix factorization (PMF) statistical source attribution analysis.
